Special Olympics athletes compete at Cuesta College

Local Special Olympic Athletes competed in the annual Spring Regional Games area meet on Friday.

420 athletes competed at Cuesta College in events from track and field to aquatics.

Volunteers, spectators, and supporters helped out at the games today.

There was also an Olympic Village where local businesses and organizations had activities and concessions.

"Our Special Olympians deserve the opportunity to participate in sports just like everybody else does," said Michael Lara, Regional Sports Manager.

"It's fun. You just have fun. You have a blast and stuff," said Danielle Derrick, gold medal winner.>

It takes more than 1,000 volunteers to put on the games.
