The national signing period for high school senior athletes continues with a splash at Righetti High School.
Boy's water polo star Matt Johnson signed a letter of intent to play for UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday afternoon. His proud mother, as well as Gauchos head coach and three-time Olympian Wolf Wigo were also on hand for the celebration.
Last fall, Matt was the Warriors leading scorer. He helped Righetti capture its second straight co-Pac-7 League title. Johnson received All-CIF and co-League most valuable player honors as a result.
Matt said he picked UCSB over Long Beach state for many reasons including academics. "It's probably one of the best water polo programs around. It's division one and ended seventh in nation," said Johnson. "I already knew a couple guys already there because they went to Righetti, so I had a few connections there so I already felt comfortable with the team."
Next fall, Matt will join fellow Righetti High graduates Noah Smith and Sam Evans on the UCSB men's water polo team.
