The St. Joseph softball team won its first Pac-7 game of the season and knocked rival Righetti out of first place in the process. The Knights beat the Warriors 9-6 in a home game on Tuesday. The win makes St. Joseph 1-6 in league play and 5-8 overall. Righetti drops to 6-2 in the Pac-7, 15-7 overall. Because Atascadero beat Paso Robles 3-2 the Greyhounds now have a one game lead on Righetti in the Pac-7 standings.
The Warriors fell beind the Knights 8-2 but rallied for four runs in the sixth inning to get back in it. Righetti hit three homers in the inning. St. Joseph added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. After the first two Warriors batters reached in the top of the seventh, Knights senior pitcher Madi Will pitched out of trouble and held on to the 9-6 lead. Will pitched a complete game for the win.
St. Joseph plays at Pioneer Valley on Friday. Righetti returns to the field next Tuesday at Pioneer Valley. The Warriors then host first place Atascadero next Friday.San Jose State-bound Jessie Hufstetler helped lead the Greyhounds into sole possession of first place. She threw a complete game with 5 strikeouts and had two hits at the plate. MacKenzine Messina added two hits and drove in a run. Laura Gorman drove in two runs for the Hounds.
