Mission Prep and St. Joseph both lost in the second round of the State Basketball Tournament on Saturday night. The Royals lost 63-59 at home to San Gabriel Academy while St. Joseph dropped a 70-44 decision at Bishop Montgomery.
Mission Prep was the three seed in Southern California's Division 5 region, San Gabriel Academy was the 11 seed. The Royals were up 28-27 at the half, 47-41 after three quarters and 53-41 with 5:57 to play. From there the Eagles went on a 22-6 run to end the game. San Gabriel Academy center Josh Ajayi had 20 points and 12 rebounds. Mission Prep finishes the season 24-9, the Royals lose four seniors. The Eagles improve to 23-9 and advance to the state quarterfinals.
After a road win the first round of the playoffs, St. Jospeh was in Torrance in the second round. Bishop Montgomery is the fifth ranked team in the state according to MaxPreps but St. Joseph was only down 36-32 with 3:00 to play in the third quarter. From there Bishop Montgomery rolled to a 26 point win to improve to 31-1. Senior guard Case Bruton led St. Joseph with 14 points as the Knights finish 23-9. Four seniors played their finals games for St. Joseph.
