Step Mom in manslaughter case gets a plea deal

A woman who was accused of shooting and killing her stepson in California Valley entered a plea of no contest in a San Luis Obispo County Courtroom Monday afternoon.

Gina Mayborn, 56, took a plea deal according to the San Luis Obispo District Attorney's office. She is expected to receive one year in county jail and five year's probation.

According to a police report, back in July Mayborn shot and killed her stepson Joseph Cochran through a bedroom window after she says she saw him arguing in the front yard with her husband Douglas Chadwick.

In the report, the husband said their step son threatened to kill them both and at one point was swinging a shovel, narrowly missing his step dad. That's when Chadwick says Mayborn shot her stepson from inside the home.

She claims that it was self-defense to save her husband's life.

She will be formally sentenced on December 5th.
