The United States men's water polo team last won Olympic gold in 1904 but that year the US won gold, silver and bronze medals because they were the only three teams in the field.
For a second straight Olympics, Team USA will be coached by Santa Barbara native Terry Schroeder. Schroeder is headed to his sixth Olympic games. The San Marcos High graduate won two silver medals in four Olympics as a player for Team USA. As head coach in 2008, he guided the men to a silver in Beijing, the team's first medal in 20 years. "The Olympics really are my drug. I'm addicted. It's a very special thing to compete in a two week period every four years and try to be at your best" said Schroeder.
Schroeder feels he has the players to win gold in London with several three-time Olympians, including San Luis Obispo native Jeff Powers. "There's a very fine line between winning and losing and I really feel like something special is going to go on with this team and I'm proud to be a part of it" said Schroeder.
He's also proud to be a part of US Olympic history. Schroeder was the model for a statue in front of the Los Angeles Coliseum. It was built to welcome visitors to the 1984 Olympic games in Los Angeles. "Sometimes when I'm there I get a feeling of being very honored and like wow, that was very special and other times I still get a little bit embarrassed about it. I mean there you are naked and there are birds sitting on your shoulders and pooping on you" said Schroeder about the headless statue.
Schroeder's already a Hall of Famer with three silver medals to his name, still he says that's not enough. "The only thing missing in my Olympic experience is a gold medal. It's the reason that I'm still involved and I know it's the same reason most of these guys are still involved. We want to make it to the top" said Schroeder.
Schroeder and Team USA begin Olympic play in London on July 29 against Montenegro.
