It's the third death at the Oceano Dunes this year. Rangers say a Stockton man died Saturday after the vehicle he was riding in launched off a sand dune into a cliff face.
Rangers say the single-passenger, dune buggy-style vehicle had a role cage, and Gary Guthrie, 60, was wearing a seat belt and full-face helmet, but that wasn't enough to protect him from the impact.
Guthrie was pronounced dead at the scene. Rangers say he was likely driving too fast and he was unfamiliar with the dunes.
Rangers say all three deaths at the dunes this year could have been avoided.
