Making reading fun was the goal today at the 4th Annual Battle of the Books.

More than 130 4th, 5th, and 6th graders from the Santa Maria Bonita School District tested their knowledge of 30 books on a required reading list. All students had to read at least 10 to participate, but many went above and beyond.

"They're getting the joy of reading. They're getting interaction with other kids, and then they're also getting that kind of competitive fun," said Susan Prober, who coordinated the program.

"I'm on my 13th," said 6th grader Allysa Kakuk. "The one this year that everybody knows me for reading is Inkspell. It's 77 chapters."

The final two teams will represent the Santa Maria Bonita School District at the Santa Barbara County Competition next month.
