A group of Cal Poly students is trying to make Mustang football's annual spring scrimmage a community-wide event and a successful fundraiser. Cal Poly's annual Spring Green and Gold Game is this Saturday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. The game marks the end of the Mustangs' three week spring camp.
About twelve students have planned an all-day event surrounding the Spring Game to benefit the San Luis Obispo Food Bank as their senior project.
The pre-game festivities start at 11am. Free tailgating in Lot C2 is available. Organizer say you can call 805-748-4757 to reserve a parking spot.
There will be a Kidzone with free admission for kids that includes food, games and a bounce house.
The game kicks off at 1pm in Alex G. Spanos Stadium. Admission to the event is one non-perishable food item or a monetary donation to the Food Bank. "We just want to get a good turn out and help raise a lot of money for the Food Bank and also get the community involved to get down here and support our football team and the start of a new season. Hopefully, everybody has a good time," said Jordan Frank, one of the student organizers.
A fifth quarter event at SLO Brew is scheduled for 8 -10 pm Saturday evening with 25 percent of food and beverage sales going to the San Luis Obispo County Food Bank. The non-profit collected and donated 5.5 million pounds of food in the county from Nipomo to San Miguel. Organizers say each dollar donated is turned into 10 pounds of food that can provide seven meals. Last year, the food bank saw more than 400,000 incidents of service in San Luis Obispo County.
