Atascadero students are giving a thumbs up to broccoli!

Santa Rosa Elementary School's PTA started a new health and wellness program that it says is the first in the area.

Each month a new fruit or vegetable is featured.

This month it is broccoli.

Students are given a flier with a kid-friendly recipe of the featured fruit or veggie, along with some fun facts.

"It's much easier to use processed foods and fast foods but we want to show them its just as economical to and easy to prepare fresh foods," said the Program Chair Veronica DeCoster.

Also, if students are spotted on campus eating the fruit or vegetable throughout the month, they are given rewards.

"I think the broccoli is really, really healthy and I think it's gonna really pay off," said one of the students, Kelsey DeCoster.

The community has also gotten involved in the program.

Albertson's donates the fruits and veggies, while Spencer's donates a $10 gift card students can win during a monthly drawing.

The money must be spent on fruits and veggies.
