LOS ANGELES (AP) - Prosecutors say a suicidal man whose reckless driving on Pacific Coast Highway killed a Malibu teenager has been sentenced to 15 years to life.
The Los Angeles District Attorney's office said in a statement that 28-year-old Sina Khankhanian (con-CON'-ee-ahn) was sentenced Friday after the judge rejected a motion for a new trial.
Prosecutors said Khankhanian was despondent over losing his job when he drove his Mitsubishi Lancer on a wild 17-mile, high-speed ride through Topanga Canyon and up the coast through Malibu on April 3, 2010.
His car struck down and killed 13-year-old Emily Rose Shane, who was walking along the street to meet her father.
It was Khankhanian's second trial. Another jury in January was unable to reach a verdict and a mistrial was declared.
