The Santa Maria Joint Union High School District will soon find out who their new superintendent is.
On Wednesday, the board of trustees will meet with the final three candidates.
This news comes months after former superintendent Doug Kimberly left for a school district in Riverside County.
Improving student achievement, raising test scores and a higher graduation rate are just a few of the goals the board wants the new superintendent to focus on.
"We're really excited about the folks coming in," said Jack Garvin, board president.
Garvin said with the help of Leadership Associates, a search firm from Southern California, they were able to narrow the 40 applicants to just three.
One thing they looked for? Former principals.
"You want somebody that's coming up through the ranks, who understands what it is to be a high school principal, who challenges that position; how time consuming it really is. And that's the richness that this candidate pool brings to the district," said Garvin.
The firm cost the school district $30,000, but Garvin insisted it was needed.
"I believe we have the next leader of this high school district in the group of three we're going to see tomorrow night," added Garvin.
Garvin hopes the new superintendent will know how to deal with the budget crisis all schools fact today, including furlough days.
"Furlough days are a disaster. It's a disaster for everybody. Kids are not in school. They're not in their seats. They're not learning," said Garvin.
The board hopes to have the new superintendent in office by October 1.
