Access to Surf Beach is closed until further notice and officials are asking the public to avoid the area after a 38-year-old man was killed by a shark while surfing Tuesday morning, according to Vandenberg Air Force Base Public Affairs.

The base says the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office has contacted a shark bite expert to confirm the injury.

A friend of the injured surfer called 911 just before 11 a.m.

The friend was performing CPR on the victim when crews from the Vandenberg Fire Department arrived.

Vandenberg officials say they will work with Santa Barbara County officials to reopen the beach once the investigation is complete.

The base says the victim's name is being withheld until 24 hours after his family is notified.
