Surfing kid makes international waves

Last week, a local surfer made international headlines after having his moves documented in Morro Bay. A video of the young surfer named Triston went viral, turning him into a surf celebrity overnight.

"My name is Triston, and I am 3-years -old and I like to surf," he said Thursday on the beach at Morro Rock.

Triston caught his first wave this summer, but how do you teach a three year old to surf?

"Teaching a 3-year-old to surf is pretty unique. I know he is not the only three year old in the world to surf, but I know there are not a lot," said his dad, Todd Gailey.

His dad said it comes down to Triston's willingness and desire to paddle out. Before taking to the waves, Triston had to prove his swimming skills by making it 25 meters across Sinsheimer Pool.

"Really one of the big things that helped him surf was putting him on a skateboard first. Letting him learn to balance on both feet and bend and move and turn, and as he liked the water more and became a better swimmer, all of a sudden he wanted to surf," said Gailey.

Turns out this kid is a prodigy. The first wave of his life was no problem. We hear stories about big wave surfers who have no concept of fear. Well, Triston might fall into this catagory.

"I don't get scared of it. When I get older I want to ride motorcycles and surf," he said.

"Don't know what tomorrow brings, but we are going to enjoy today and get some fun waves," said Gailey.

"Hang loose," said Triston, whose 15 minutes of fame live on.

This weekend, Triston will be on the Today Show.
