A group of survivors show how tough they really are.
The Central Coast Surviveoars Dragon Boat team is made up of women who have survived cancer. They practice in Morro Bay and some members even race competitively. A local doctor recently donated a new dragon boat, so today, those women hit the water and taught others how to paddle.
The steady beat of a drum helped guide the first-time dragon racers through the water in Morro Bay. With a new boat, and special paddles in hand, they learned firsthand what it takes to be a member of the Surviveoars.
Dr. Tom Spillane, who donated the boat said "They're tough, not only did they beat cancer but getting out here today and getting in the boat with them and seeing how hard this is they are tough, tough women."
The team boasts members of all ages and abilities, who say the physical workout is unlike any other.
"I feel stronger everyday," said Surviveoar member Miki Billman. "And part of that is because of working out here."
Joanne Frawley, a breast cancer survivor, said "everyone is encouraged to do what they can and if you need to rest, you rest."
But as great as the exercise is, the team says the mental support is a vital part of the healing process.
"We don't focus on the cancer," said Gillman. "We focus on our work in the boat."
Frawley agreed. "We have fun," she said. "We talk, we're very supportive of each other but it's basically you don't think about any situation you have, you just have a wonderful time with wonderful friends."
A group of women spreading the survivor message, and proving they can paddle their way through anything.
"It helps to know that others have survived," said Gillman. "And that you can be healthy again."
