TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Police in New Jersey say a man accused of killing his girlfriend and her 13-year-old son, and holding three of her other children hostage was a registered sex offender who had a long criminal history.
Police say they ended the standoff early Sunday after they noticed that 38-year-old Gerald Murphy's state of mind was deteriorating.
Police shot Murphy and he died. The three children were rescued, as well as a 19-year-old who was rescued earlier.
