Suspicious van raises concern at a local elementary school

Parents and staff at Harloe Elementary are on alert after two kids reported a white van following them to school Friday morning.

It happened near the intersection of South Halcyon and Dodson Way in Arroyo Grande.

Administrators at the Lucia Mar School District, principals, and private schools in the area have all been notified.

Both kids who reported the incident are fifth graders at Harloe Elementary.

One student said he was walking to school on Cerro Vista Circle near Alpine Street when he noticed a white van with no rear windows following him.

He says when he stopped walking, so did the van.

The boy ran down Dodson Way where he met up with his friend.

The two then started running on South Halcyon, where the van continued following them.

They ran into the parking lot of the Arroyo Grande Community Hospital and got away.

Chuck Fiorentino, Harloe Elementary Principal, said, "Make sure you have avenues of escape, make sure you know that you can knock on a door. You can go into a business, there are always thing you can do to protect yourself as a student."

The principal says there are about half a dozen of these incidents per year in the Lucia Mar School District.

The two boys described the driver as a white man in his mid 30's to early 40's with a small goatee.

As simple as it may sounds, police say it's never too late to remind your kids not to get in the car with strangers and always be aware of your surroundings.
