If you're looking for cough relief, you may want to reach for sugary sweet or minty cough drops.

Researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center tested the cough suppressant effects of holding sugar water in a person's mouth or breathing in menthol.

To elicit a cough, researchers exposed the study participants to Capsaicin, concentrated forms of red hot chili peppers.

Both the sugar water and the menthol reduced coughing better than plain water or breathing in clean air.

Experts suggest adding menthol flavor to cigarettes may make it easier to begin smoking by suppressing the cough reflex.
