In preparation for a busy holiday weekend, the California Highway Patrol reminds drivers, no matter where you're going, make sure you get there safely. Be sure to slow down and follow the rules of the road, especially if you're a teen driver. They only make up four percent or California's drivers, but the CHP says they're responsible for more than 66 percent of all fatal collisions in the state.

Brandon Norling has first hand experience that changed his life. He ran a red light last year in Santa Maria and killed another driver, 84-year old Verna Mae Asbury. He was convicted of involuntary manslaughter without gross negligence. As part of his sentence, he has to speak to teens in a class called Smart Start.

The CHP encourages new and future drivers as well as their parents to sign up for the program. It discusses about how to avoid collisions and drive responsibly. For more information on taking the Smart Start class, contact your local CHP office.
