Teen wins car for pledging to remain a sober driver

Santa Maria High School graduate Elmer Barrueta is the winner of a Mini Cooper from McCarthy's in San Luis Obispo for pledging to remain a sober driver.

Barrueta entered the "All in Driver" giveaway, along with hundreds of other northern Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County high school seniors.

The students took a pledge and signed a year-long agreement to remain unimpaired drivers.

Winning the car has special meaning for Barrueta, because he says he made a promise to classmate Jade Dodson just days before she was killed in a car crash in Santa Maria.

Barrueta says he told Jade he'd take her out for a night on the town if he won the car.

Dodson died when a driver ran a red light at the intersection of Broadway and McCoy, hitting the car in which she was a passenger.

Cristian Carbajal, 19, has been charged with vehicular manslaughter in connection to that crash.
