Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center now has a way to guarantee emergency room stroke victims, or patients with any other neurologic emergency, will receive care within 15 minutes, day or night.
The hospital has partnered with Specialists On Call that will provide 24/7 teleneurology service.
Patients and E.R. physicians will communicate with a board certified neurologist in real time over a high definition video conferencing screen.
For patients suffering from acute stroke, the timely care from a neurologist can mean the difference between life and death.
"Teleneurology is a solution for smaller communities like San Luis Obispo that have limited resources yet want to provide the highest quality of care," said Dr. Tom Clark, a local neurologist and medical director of the Sierra Vista Stroke Center. "This service will provide immediate consultations for patients whose conditions, and ultimate recovery, depend on timely diagnosis and treatment."
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and the number one cause of disability.
