The Templeton baseball team is having its best season since joining the Los Padres League and now the Eagles have sole possession of first place for the first time ever. Templeton beat Santa Ynez 1-0 on Tuesday in Templeton. The Eagles and Pirates both entered 5-1 in the L.P.L.
With the win Templeton improves to 6-1 in league and 13-3 overall. Santa Ynez drops into second at 5-2, the Pirates are now 16-4 overall.
It was a classic pitchers dual as Templeton's Evan Peterson and Nathan Thompson from Santa Ynez went the distance. Peterson hurled a shutout but did get into trouble a few times. In the fourth the senior allowed the first two batters to reach before getting out of the inning with a strikeout and double play. There was a runner on second when he recorded the final out on a pop fly. Peterson threw 101 pitches, which was a high for the season. He has been dealing with a side injury and pitched more than the coaches expected him to. "I'm trying to get these guys that way where as long as they want to be a bulldog, I'll let them be a bulldog" said Templeton head coach Brad Macomber.
"We haven't won this many games every single year and it's just been so great to come together as a team and win and play well together" said Peterson.
Templeton will host Morro Bay on Tuesday, the Eagles have six regular season games left, five are L.P.L. games. Santa Ynez also has six games left, five being league contests. The Pirates play at Lompoc on Tuesday.
Nipomo beat Morro Bay 5-3 on Friday. The Titans scored twice in the first inning and never looked back. The Titans improved to 5-2 in league and stayed a game back of first place Templeton.
