Alex Kotheimer scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to deliver a thrilling 3-2 win for the Templeton High baseball team in a key Los Padres League battle over second place Nipomo Friday night.
The Eagles improved to 8-1 in league and 15-3 overall. They maintained their one game lead over Lompoc in the LPL standings, while Nipomo fell to 6-3 in league and dropped two games out of first place.
The Titans scored once in the first, but the Eagles tied it 1-1 in the bottom half on an error. Templeton surged ahead 2-1 on double by Tyler Kollman that drove in Kotheimer.
Nipomo scored the equalizer in the fifth inning on a two-out single to left that scored A.J. Campos.
Templeton took the lead for good in the fifth when Marc Baker's pitch was in the dirt and skipped to the backstop allowing Kotheimer to score.
Evan Peterson delivered another clutch performance on the mound for the Eagles with a complete game victory. The senior, who blanked Santa Ynez last week 1-0, is still recovering from an injury to his side suffered earlier in the season.
Lompoc crushed Santa Maria 17-0 to stay one game back of Templeton. The Braves collected 17 hits and walked 10 times to improve to 7-2 in league. The Braves had ten players with at least one hit. Tyler Ornelas scored 3 times, Joe Valla scored twice and drove in two, while Aaron Kidd scored three times and drove in two. They were among the seven Braves with 2 hits apiece.
Anthony Slikker pitched a complete game shutout. He allowed just 3 hits, walked 4 and struck out 11.
