Templeton loses 9 inning heartbreaker in CIF quarterfinals

Three errors allowed the game-winning run to score in the bottom of the ninth inning as Ontario Christian baseball ended Templeton's magical season 2-1 in a CIF Division 5 quarterfinal game. The Eagles, who secured the program's first-ever outright Los Padres League title and advanced to their first Southern Section quarterfinal in nearly 25 years, finished the season 19-5. Ontario Christian moved on to the semifinals with a 24-5 record. Ontario Christian scored a run in the bottom of the first inning against Templeton ace Mac Lardner. However, the freshman left hander blanked Ontario Christian until the fateful ninth inning. Templeton tied it in the fifth when Donald Syracuse was hit by a pitch. Jacob Walsh went into pinch run for Syracuse, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Austin Alarcon and scored on a double by Michael Frigon. The Eagles thought they had taken a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning when Andy Garretson doubled and came around to score on a double from Taylor Tobin. But Garretson was called out at home for missing the plate. Lardner had allowed only 4 hits into the ninth when with two outs, Alarcon was charged with an error at third base. Lardner committed an error on a ball to put runners at first and second. The runners moved up on a wild pitch and the winning run scored on an error by Tobin at catcher. Templeton committed three errors in the inning and five in the game. The Eagles out-hit the host team 9-4. Tobin went 3 for 3, while Spencer Walsh went 2 for 4. Lardner, who's just a freshman, went 8 2/3 innings. He allowed just 4 hits, 2 runs, only 1 run was earned, 3 walks and struck out 4.
