The six-time defending Los Padres League champion Santa Ynez girls volleyball team won a five set thriller over visiting Templeton on Tuesday in both teams' league finales. However, the Eagles still left with the program's first-ever LPL outright title thanks to Cabrillo's win over second place Nipomo.
The Pirates won 27-25, 24-26, 25-14, 10-25 and 15-12 to improve to 9-3 in LPL play. The Eagles fell to 10-2 in league matches.
Carly Roth led the Eagles with 17 kills, while Heather Fields and Autumn Russell collected 15 kills apiece. Mari Stewart added 11 kills and 4 blocks, while Fields registered 21 digs. Lindsey Wyatt led Templeton with 41 digs, while Sydney Roth tallied 54 assists in the loss.
Templeton earns the league's #1 seed for CIF.
Nipomo had a chance to share the title, its first since 2005, with a win at Cabrillo. The Conquistadores had different plans and won 25-17, 26-24 and 25-20 to upset the Titans. Cristina Ozzimo had 28 assists for the Titans, while Paige Waymire led Nipomo with 15 kills and Taylor Nevitt added 10. Sarah Stahl recorded 31 digs for the Titans, who fell to 9-3 in league matches. Cabrillo improved to 8-4 in league play.
