After putting up some huge numbers in Templeton High football's 49-42 season-opening win at Carpinteria last Friday, senior quarterback Alex Elterman earns the season's first Friday Night Highlights Player of the Week.
Elterman threw for 289 passing yards and 3 touchdowns to help the Eagles take the back-and-forth thriller. Elterman also rushed for 95 yards on 7 carries to account for 384 total yards of offense himself.
It was easily Alex's biggest game, numbers-wise, in his high school career. "It was a real statement game for us. We beat them last year in playoffs and we knew that they wanted to prove they were better than us and come out and beat us. It was just good knowing we performed the way that we wanted to," said Elterman, who also led the Eagles to victory in the first round of CIF last season.
Elterman is leading the Eagles' no-huddle offense this season, something head coach Dan Loney implemented this season only because of his quarterback's abilities on and off the field. "He's taken over the offense. He's been really good at breaking down film and seeing what defenses are giving him and taking advantage of that," said Loney.
Other players considered this week were Pioneer Valley High quarterback Andrew Madrigal (158 yards passing, 108 yards rushing), Lavon Coleman of Lompoc (170 yards rushing, 2 touchdowns), Andy Rowley of Mission Prep (3 catches, 128 yards, 2 TD) and Derek Viles of Morro Bay (145 yards rushing, 1 TD, 1 FG).
For winning this week, Elterman receives a $25 gift card to our FNH Player of the Week sponsor Subway.
