Starting in Nashville, head out U.S. 41 for 32 miles to Murfeesboro, then 24 miles south on U.S. 231 to Shelbyville, southeast on Rte. 82 for 14 miles to Rte. 55, and three miles southwest to Lynchburg. This looks like a short trip, but there is enough to see and do to take up at least a day.
You can spend several days in Nashville seeing the sights, but city sights are not what this tour is about. We recommend that you go to the nearest souvenir store and buy a "Homes of the Stars" map and a good "Nashville and Vicinity" map. Drive around Nashville and find the homes of your favorites. It's a kick to see the homes of all the country music stars with guitar-shaped pools, pink statues and some surprisingly plain middle-class houses.
On the way to Murfeesboro, be sure to stop at the Sam Davis Home and the Stones River Battlefield. Shelbyville is the home of the Tennessee Walking Horse with a museum and frequent horse shows.
In Lynchburg, step back to the early-1900s, where town folk gathered around the potbelly stove at the hardware store and old Jack Daniel made his sour mash whisky. The tour of the distillery is fascinating and well performed, but no tasting unless you plan on taking it back home. Lynchburg is still dry.
