Terrifying Ride: Bus Brakes Fail

(WPTV) Cameras captured a wild school bus ride in Palm Beach County, Florida. Students panicked when the brakes appeared to fail on their way home from Spanish River High School.

Video shot during the ordeal shows moments of terror as the 40 foot long school bus zooms down a busy road in Boca Raton moving against traffic -- without a way to stop.

"It was a very scary moment. I was so nervous about everything that was going on," said bus rider Nadya Williams.

Williams was on the bus along with three other friends heading home from Spanish River High School.

They spoke with the permission of their parents. They said there was first a noise -- then smoke -- then a brakeless free fall down Glades Road.

"We're trying to get help and everyone is honking. Other cars, everyone is honking and waving at us like we're playing a game," said Monica Hopfensperger, another bus rider

The bus driver dodged car after car flying down the wrong way of the road.

"Oh I really thought we were going to kill somebody," bus rider Laticia Leon said. Miraculously no one was hurt.
The bus driver eventually brought the bus to a halt by rubbing its tires against the curb.
