Testing the "apple a day" theory

Researchers studied the old phrase "an apple a day can keep the doctor away," to see if it holds true.

UK Scientists looked at the effects of an apple per day of adults over 50, and compared them to a cholesterol-lowering drug called Statin. They found more than 8,000 deaths from stroke and heart attack could be avoided each year if 70% of older adults ate an apple a day.

And more than 9,000 deaths would be prevented by prescribing all adults a Statin. However, more cases of Diabetes and muscle disease would rise because of the side effects linked to the drugs.
