The nominees are.... KSBY announces finalists for Prep Athletes of the Year

KSBY Sports will announce a Male and Female Prep Athlete of the Year later this week. Bill Halter and Andrew Masuda crunched the numbers and story lines to come up with five finalists for each award.

KSBY Sports narrowed the field to seniors only and focused more on athletes, who shined in more than one sport. The winners will be announced later this week on the newscasts.

Male Athlete of the Year Finalists

Andy Garretson, Templeton
All-League First Team Defense in football; 37 tackles, 39 catches for 498 yards and 3 touchdowns
LPAL MVP in boys basketball; averaged 16 points, 8 rebounds per game
All-League First Team in baseball; .350 average, 4-1 with 1.79 ERA
Nikko Hayes, Lompoc
All-CIF honors and LPAL Offensive Back of the Year in football; 1,081 rushing yards with 15 TD and 49 tackles
Finished fifth at CIF State Meet in 300 Meter Hurdles
Andy Rowley, Mission Prep
Caught 16 passes for 397 yards and 6 touchdowns with 66 tackles and 7 pass deflections for CIF runner-up team in football
All-CIF honors in boys basketball; averaged 13 points, 3 assists and 2.5 steals per game for CIF runner-up team in basketball
Matt Willkomm, Arroyo Grande
All-League First Team in football at quarterback for co-league champion Eagles; threw for 1,495 yards and 16 touchdowns with just 2 interceptions; rushed for 498 yards and 3 more touchdowns
All-CIF honors and All-League First Team in basketball; led Eagles to CIF semifinals, averaged almost 17 points per game
Luke Wilson, Righetti
All-CIF honors in football, PAC 7 Defensive Back of the Year; caught 68 passes for 1,064 yards and 7 touchdowns; recorded 138 tackles with 4 interceptions
Won CIF State Wrestling title at 152 pounds; first Righetti wrestler to win state since 1977 and seventh ever from the Central Coast; finished third at Nationals to earn All-American honors for the second year in a row

Female Athlete of the Year Finalists

Erica Chandler, San Luis Obispo
All-League First Team in girls basketball
Led Tigers to CIF semifinals, 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals per game
Hit .402 for softball team with 26 runs and 12 stolen bases
All-League Second Team in softball
Katie Chenault, Righetti
Led Righetti softball to first CIF title since 1982
Earned PAC 7 League MVP
Hit .357 with 5 HR and 25 RBI
Went 24-5 with 3 no-hitters, 1.08 ERA, 288 strikeouts in 175 2/3 innings
Tatiana Dunlap, St. Joseph
All-CIF honors, PAC 7 League MVP for league champion girls basketball team
Averaged 23.7 points, 9 rebounds per game
Cristina Ozzimo, Nipomo
All-League First Team in girls volleyball
Averaged 9.5 Assists per Set
Los Padres League Offensive MVP in girls soccer
Scored 30 goals and had 9 assists
Finished 2nd in LPAL finals in 100 meter dash, third in 200 dash
Carli Watt, Morro Bay
All-League Second Team in girls volleyball
Hit .388 with 22 runs and earned All-League First honors in softball
