Theatre helps bring new life to mall

Santa Maria Town Center mall leaders say plans are in place for some big additions next year.

Mall spokesperson Amber Lease says her staff is working on bringing in nine new tenants in 2014, as well as three chain restaurants.

Lease says it's all part of mall renovations.

Phase one is complete after the building of the 14-screen Edwards Theatre that opened in November.

The second phase is filling the empty space with new retailers, as well as touching up the inside of the mall with new wall colors, lighting and bathrooms.

Lease says the third and final phase will be about three to four years down the road. The plan is to add small, local shops to the list of retailers.

She says it has taken years to get the mall back on its feet.

"That theatre was the gift of the season for us. I think it's bringing us the foot traffic we were hoping for. It's putting life back into the mall. It's bringing excitement. So I think overall we are headed down the right path again," said Lease.

The $8.2 million theatre is located where the old Gottschalks department store once stood.
