The Cabrillo softball team's magical season ended with a CIF Division 5 first round playoff loss to Barstow 6-5 in eight innings on Thursday.
The Conquistadores, who were seeded third and riding a 9 game winning streak, finished the season 17-10. The Lady Conqs were still able to capture the program's first outright Los Padres League title since 2006.
Barstow scored 2 runs in the first inning off sophomore pitcher Madison McNamee. Cabrillo scored once in the second on a run-scoring single from Sydney Townes that scored Eleesha Rodriguez. Cabrillo tied it at 2-2 in the third on an inside the park home run from McNamee, where the ball got by the left fielder after she stumbled and fell to the ground.
Cabrillo took a 4-2 lead in the fourth on RBI singles from Taylor Pacheco and Ariana Abayari. Barstow tied it with 2 runs in the fifth and took a 5-4 lead with a RBI single in the sixth inning.
The Conquistores tied it in the seventh with plenty of drama. McNamee led off with a single and with two outs, she scored on a two-strike pinch hit single from Mikayla Kerstner to plate McNamee and send it to extra innings.
Barstow scored the game-winning run in the top of the eighth on an errant throw to first by third baseman Haylee Kennedy that allowed a runner to score from third. Cabrillo loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth with two outs after two errors and an intentional walk to McNamee. However, Carissa Sanchez grounded out to third to end the game and Cabrillo's season.
McNamee went 4 for 4 with a home run, walk, and two runs scored for Cabrillo. Rodriguez scored twice and Pacheco had 2 hits from the ninth position in the batting order.
