Santa Maria's gang problem has been growing, especially among youth. City officials, experts, and leaders from throughout the community are meeting to take a closer look at the issue. Santa Barbara County Supervisor Joe Centeno is a former Santa Maria police chief. He organized the meeting, inviting more than 100 participants for the three day session.

Law enforcement officials have documented more than 2500 gang members in Santa Barbara County. 900 of those are in the Santa Maria and Guadalupe areas.
