Thursday is expected to be the busiest delivery day for holiday packages; that's according to the United States Postal Service.
In San Luis Obispo, about 5,900 packages were delivered Thursday. In Santa Maria, it was 5,000.
KSBY's Nikki Ibarra got a behind-the-scenes look to see how a local post office prepared for the busy day.
Alfred Ramos will make about 800 stops throughout Santa Maria on Thursday.
"Everybody is in good spirits and we enjoy the season. We enjoy the season together so it's good," said Ramos, a letter carrier with the United States Postal Service in Santa Maria.
But before he heads out, he has to organize all of the letters, cards, bills and packages he'll be delivering.
"It's part of the job. It's part of what we do, which is service the American people during the season so it's good," added Ramos.
Ramos starts his day at 7 a.m. He's usually done by 4:30 p.m., but Thursday he'll put in some over time. "Our parcel post gets very heavy. We're out there delivering a lot of packages," said Ramos.
On Thursday, it took Ramos about an hour and a half to prepare for his route. "We bridge communities. We bridge coast to coast and it, it's a good thing," said Ramos.
