Led by sweep from top singles player Mason Hansen and from the number two doubles team of Luke Iunker and Noah Cleere, the San Luis Obispo boys tennis team pulled off its biggest win in recent memory. The Tigers upset Valencia, the #1 seed in Division 3, 10-8 in the second round of the CIF playoffs.
The 16-4 Tigers advance to Monday's quarterfinals and host Aliso Niguel, which edged South Torrance 10-8 on Friday.
Hansen overcame an early deficit to top Valencia's #1 singles player J.J. Sahaby 7-6. He then rolled in the next two sets 6-1 and 6-0.
Nick Johnson, who played at #2 singles, won his opening set 6-4 before he lost his second set. With the Tigers leading 9-8 and one set remaining, Johnson sealed the victory with a 6-2 win in his third set.
SLO led 4-2 after the first round and led 7-5 after the second round. Valencia won the first three sets of the third round before Hansen, Iunker/Cleere and Johnson emerged victorious.
The last time an unseeded Central Coast team knocked off a #1 seed in the CIF playoffs was in the fall when Atascadero football upset the top seed Palmdale in the first round.
