David Thoreson missed a three-point shot to tie it at the buzzer as the Tigers fell short in their impressive bid to upset defending CIF champion Pasadena 57-54 to open the third annual National Prep Classic hosted by St. Joseph on Wednesday night.
The Tigers, led by first year head coach Laurie Decker, fell to 3-3 after the hard-fought battle.
SLO trailed 11-10 after the first quarter and 24-16 at the half. The Tigers inched closer and managed to tie it 34-34 in the third quarter, before starting the fourth quarter trailing 41-34.
Parker Lauritzen hit two 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. David Thoreson led the Tigers with 17 points.
Andre Spight, a 6-3 guard committed to UTEP, tallied 17 points and Brandon Jolley added 15 for Pasadena, which is the same team that beat Arroyo Grande in the CIF title game last season.
The Bulldogs started the week ranked 8th in Division 1AA, while the Tigers were #15 in Division 3A.
San Luis Obispo returns to action Thursday at 3 pm against a team from Australia at Hancock College.
