Starting today, tobacco users will not be allowed to smoke or chew tobacco in certain parts of San Luis Obispo. The city council voted to ban tobacco use in all San Luis Obispo city owned recreational areas, Mission Plaza, and the creek walkway downtown.

The council voted on the ban after listening to recommendations from the Parks and Recreations Commission, San Luis Obispo city staff, and testimony from dozens of people who expressed concerns about secondhand smoke, tobacco litter and youth smoking.

Community members also asked the city council to expand the ban to include other public outdoor areas. The city is currently working on a more comprehensive ban that would be implemented citywide, and the issue will be brought back to the table in March.
