LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles County labor leaders say Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello will help kick off a weekend protest aimed at preventing a Wal-Mart from opening in LA's historic Chinatown.
The rally is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Los Angeles Historic State Park.
Following appearances by Morello, United Farm Workers of America co-founder Dolores Huerta and others, Wal-Mart opponents plan to march through Chinatown to the site of the proposed store.
Walmart, Inc. began construction this week with plans to open the store next year.
The company says the store will fulfill a need in the community for fresh food and other groceries.
LA County Federation of Labor spokeswoman Caroline O'Connor says Wal-Mart will drive smaller stores out of business and bring low-wage, substandard jobs to the community.
