Tombstones uncovered at SF beach

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Tombstones that were used years ago to shore up the seawall at San Francisco's Ocean Beach are once again visible.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/KThjMT) that strong winds and shifting sands uncovered the old grave markers this week.
One of them - a nearly intact marble tombstone - carries the name of Delia Presby Oliver, who died at the age of 26 on Apr. 9, 1890. Oliver's gravestone was uncovered in a sand drift at the end of Rivera Street.
San Francisco historian John Martini says gravestones turned up in the same area some years ago. The tombstones and thousands like it were used throughout the city for various purposes, including landfill.
The National Park Service, which manages Ocean Beach, says it does not plan to remove the gravestones.
