The biggest win in the Cal Poly men's basketball team's program is the eighth story included in KSBY's Top Local Sports Stories of 2012.
The Mustangs went down to legendary Pauley Pavilion on November 25 and knocked off 11th ranked UCLA 70-68. Cal Poly overcame an 18 point second half deficit to post the program's first-ever win over a Top 25 ranked team since turning Division I nineteen years ago.
Morro Bay High graduate Dylan Royer fueled the comeback by hitting a career-high six 3-point baskets to match his career-high with 18 points.
The game was tied 68-68 with 14 seconds left when UCLA's Norman Powell fouled Kyle Odister thinking that the Bruins were down by one and needed to foul Cal Poly. The junior guard hit both free throws and UCLA missed a potential game-winning 3-point shot at the buzzer to hand the Mustangs the epic victory.
The Mustangs said they hoped it was the first of many monumental wins for the program. "We want the next generation, the next year to be even better than we were this year and that's the foundation that we're trying to set up that coach callero and the staff has really put forth is that we want to set up a tradition of winning and this is just the start of it," said Royer.
Cal Poly opens Big West play Saturday at UC Riverside.
KSBY Sports will unveil another Top 10 in 2012 on Thursday and Friday night. A webpoll to determine the #1 story of 2012 will appear on Friday on ksby.com.
