Top 10 Local Sports Stores of 2012: Memorable summer by Duane Solomon, Jr.

KSBY Sports continues with our end of the year tradition by announcing the Top 10 local sports stories of 2012. We will unveil our top ten in random order and then leave it up to viewers to vote on our KSBY website.
Our countdown begins on Friday with the memorable run by Duane Solomon, Junior.
The Cabrillo high graduate's memorable summer started with a then career-best run in the 800 meter final at the US Olympics Trials. The 27 year old finished third to qualify for the London Olympics with a time of 1:44.65. He bettered his time at a Pre-Olympic meet in Monaco with a mark of 1:43.44, the fifth fastest time ever run by an American.
While never forgetting his 805 roots, Solomon breezed into the 800 final in London, which was his first time competing in an Olympic Games.
Solomon, Jr. faced the world's best in the final and stayed toward the back of the pack until the final 150 meters. He finished fourth in 1:42.82 and missed out on a Bronze Medal by .3 of a second. He still set a new personal-best time, which is the second-fastest time ever run by an American.
"For me to be on this stage and get in the finals is amazing. It's more than I would have ever dreamed of. It's like a lot of people counted me out of making the team and then I come here and make the final. It's a big story for me," said Solomon Jr. moments after the 800 final. Kenay's David Rudisha won the Gold Medal breaking his world record time with a mark of 1:40.91.
Solomon plans to make a run at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
