KSBY sports is unveiling the top 10 Central Coast sports stories of 2012, after the stories are introduced a vote on ksby.com will select the winner. The fourth story KSBY Sports has identified is the Cal Poly football team winning a share of the Big Sky championship in its first season in the conference.
The Mustangs went 7-1 against the Big Sky, earning a share of first place with Eastern Washington and Montana State. Cal Poly needed wins against Idaho State and Northern Arizona in the final two weeks to secure a championship. The Mustangs did win both games, beating the Bengals 70-14 at home and winning at Northern Arizona, 42-34.
Overall the Mustangs finished 9-3, losing in the second round of the FCS playoffs, 18-16 at Sam Houston State. The Bearkats have since advanced to the FCS championship game. Sam Houston State will play North Dakota State for the title on January 5.
Cal Poly head coach Tim Walsh was fourth in the Eddie Robinson balloting, presented annually to the FCS coach of the year. Senior slotback Deonte Williams was a second team All-American selection after rushing for 1,506 yards and 12 touchdowns.
