Sophomore right fielder Nick Torres hit two home runs and drove in all five Cal Poly runs as the Mustangs beat the University of Washington, 5-3 on Saturday at Husky Ballpark. The win improves Cal Poly to 8-1 on the season and evens the three game series in Washington at one. The Huskies won on Friday, 2-1. The final game is set for Sunday at 1:00pm.
Three Cal Poly pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts and no walks. Starter Matt Imhof improved to 2-0 after pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing three earned runs, the first earned runs he's given up this season.
Imhof allowed the Huskies to score twice in the third inning but Torres quickly turned things around with a three-run home run in the fourth. He added a two-run shot in the sixth for a 5-2 Cal Poly lead.
Washington scored a run in the bottom of the sixth before junior right-hander Michael Holback relieved Imhof and shut the door on the Huskies. Holback pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing no walks with four strikeouts. He got into trouble in the ninth and with two on and one out gave way to Reed Reilly. Reilly recorded the final two outs, both by strikeout to earn his fourth save of the season. Holback and Reilly have combined to pitch 18 innings this season without giving up a run.
Torres has three home runs and a double in the series after collecting just five hits in the first seven games of the season.
Junior third baseman Jimmy Allen and sophomore center fielder Alex Michaels each added a single and double, but the Mustangs were outhit by Washington, 11-7.
Cal Poly will send sophomore right-hander Bryan Granger (2-0, 1.93 ERA) to the mound against Washington sophomore right-hander Tyler Davis (0-0, 5.23 ERA) on Sunday.
