The Santa Barbara City Fire Department says an underground transformer fire is to blame for scattered power outages.

Fire officials responded to the fire at 3:52 p.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Via Diego and Invierno in the north end of Santa Barbara. The area was immediately closed to all traffic.

Southern California Edison is assessing the situation, but they say businesses in the Five Points Shopping Center as well as businesses along upper State Street are without power. Other residential neighborhoods were also affected.

There is no estimated time for the power to be restored.
