The Central and South Coasts went 3 for 3 in the first round of the 800 meter run at the US Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon on Friday. Former Cal Poly All-American Maggie Vessey, Lompoc native Duane Solomon, Jr. and UCSB's Ryan Martin automatically advanced into Saturday's semifinals.
Vessey was the first to go of the group. She finished second in her heat in the women's first round. The former Mustang was clocked in 2:03.31, which ranks 11th among the 16 semifinalists. Vessey finished fifth at US Olympic Trials in 2008 and missed a spot on the Olympic Team by one second.
Martin, who was coming off a fourth place finish at the NCAA Championships, finished second in his heat with a time of 1:46.92 to automatically advance. Martin ended up with the second fastest time of the day, trailing only Tyler Mulder, who won his heat by .11 of a second.
Solomon finished third in his heat to advance with a time of 1:47.91. His time ranks 13th out of the 16 semifinalists. Solomon finished fifth at the 2008 Trials and missed out on the Olympic Team by half a second.
The women's semifinals are scheduled for 4:30 pm on Saturday, with the men following at 4:45 pm.
The top eight advance to Monday night's final. All three are trying to make their first US Olympic Team.
