Three middle distance runners from the Central Coast will start to chase down spots on their first USA Olympic Team on Friday at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon.
Former Cal Poly All-American Maggie Vessey runs in the women's 800 meter first round. Lompoc native Duane Solomon, Jr. and UC Santa Barbara's Ryan Martin compete in the men's 800 meter first round.
They'll be looking to advance to Saturday's semifinal heats. The finals are set for Monday. The top three in the finals, who've met the A Standard time, earn spots on Team USA.
Vessey finished fifth at the 2008 Olympic Trials. She enters the Trials with the second fastest qualifying time at 1:58.50.
Martin, who finished fourth at the NCAA Division I Championships earlier this month, ranks in the top 6 with a time of 1:44.77. Solomon, a Cabrillo High graduate, finished sixth at the 2008 Trials. He enters with a time of 1:45.66.
