While there are eight athletes with ties to San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties competing in London for Team USA, two women are representing other countries in the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Ina-Yoko Teutenberg will ride in the women's cycling road race and time trial for Germany. The 37 year old lives and trains in San Luis Obispo. She used to ride for SLO-based Team Columbia Highroad, which disbanded last year. She now competes for Team Specialized-Lululemon. A former German national champion, Teutenberg is one of the most successful female riders in history. She competed for Germany in 2000 and 2008.
Westmont College's Tugce Canitez is competing for her native country of Turkey in women's basketball. Turkey earned a berth by defeating Argentina 72-58. In three games in the qualifying tournament, the 6-2 forward tallied 29 minutes, 11 points and 7 rebounds. Turkey has been assigned to Pool A, which includes China, the Czech Republic and the United States. Canitez, a senior-to-be, was named the Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year and a First-Team NAIA All-American after averaging 19 points and 10.5 rebounds per game for Westmont.
Turkey plays the U.S. on August 1. The Americans beat Turkey 80-61 over the weekend in an exhibition. Canitez had 3 points in 8 minutes of play.
