Two Paso Robles women are doing okay after escaping an apartment fire in San Francisco Sunday that hurt six people.
Flames ripped through the Mission District apartment building late Sunday morning, where Elizabeth Boatman, 22, and Tabitha Russell, 23, originally of Paso Robles, were living. Five firefighters inside the building were hurt when a staircase collapsed.
KSBY News spoke with Russell on Monday, who said she woke up to the flames, grabbed what she could and ran outside.
"Some of the sentimental stuff is hard to replace but obviously its more worth it than be unharmed and be completely fine and have this support than some random tchotchke." said Russell.
She added, "The hardest part of it is just not having a place to live. It feels like I'm just going to go home today to San Francisco, but then I'm like oh yeah, that doesn't exist anymore."
According to the American Red Cross, 37 people lost their homes in the fire. Russell is staying at a hotel in Palo Alto that has donated rooms to the people displaced. So far there is no word on what sparked the fire.
