Two people remain in the hospital after suffering injuries from an accident on Highway 101 Wednesday night.

The accident occurred when an elderly woman entered Highway 101 from the San Luis Bay Drive off-ramp around 9 p.m. The California Highway Patrol says the driver, 87-year-old Dorthy Nekervis from Avila Beach, was heading north in the southbound lanes when she collided head-on with a Dodge Caravan.

Two people in the van were taken to a local hospital with moderate injuries, according to the CHP. One of the victims is currently in the intensive care unit in critical condition. Nekervis is also in the intensive care unit and is listed in serious condition.

Officers do not believe drugs or alcohol played a part in the accident.
