The Santa Barbara Police Department has a warning about a scam targeting the elderly, after two locals recently lost more than $6,000 each to scammers.
This type of fraud is commonly called the Grandparent Scam. Police say scammers contact an elder by telephone and claim to be that person's grandchild or other relative. The scammer then claims to need money to get out of legal trouble or pay for injuries received in a car accident.
Santa Barbara Police say local victims of the scam sent their money to perpetrators in Canada.
